Happy Ads gave Kurkure's 'Toofani' brand platform a format no other ad in Pakistan had ever used: microphone-activated rich media where blowing into your phone triggered the brand moment.
The Challenge
Kurkure — PepsiCo Pakistan's market-leading spicy snack brand — had a creative platform called 'Toofani' (meaning storm or explosive) that needed a digital expression as explosive as the name. Standard banner and video formats could carry the visual language but couldn't put the audience inside the experience. An ad that showed a storm was not the same as an ad that made you feel you caused one.
The creative brief pushed beyond conventional formats: could a mobile ad actually involve the user's body, not just their eyes? Could the interaction mechanic itself communicate the brand's 'explosive energy' proposition without relying on visual metaphor alone? Building this required custom microphone integration within an HTML5 ad unit — a technical challenge with no existing Pakistan precedent.
The interaction needed to be intuitive enough that users would try it without instruction, and satisfying enough that the payoff rewarded the gesture. A user blowing into their phone is a significant ask — the brand moment that followed had to be worth it.
The Solution
Happy Ads' creative-tech team engineered a microphone-activated HTML5 rich media ad for Kurkure Toofani — Pakistan's first mic-activated mobile brand experience. When the ad loaded, it prompted users to blow into their phone. The microphone detected audio input in real time; above a threshold, the creative triggered: Kurkure's Toofani storm visual erupted from the user's breath, with product imagery exploding across the screen in the brand's signature red and orange palette.
The microphone integration required WebRTC API access within the ad unit — involving browser permission handling, audio threshold calibration (sensitive enough for a blow, not triggered by ambient noise), and creative timing synchronisation. The payoff animation was engineered to feel physically responsive: the harder the blow, the more dramatic the effect.
The campaign ran as a rich media unit across Pakistani mobile inventory with no app download required. The novelty of the format was its own distribution engine: users who encountered the ad shared the experience because it was surprising and fun — producing organic conversation and social sharing on top of paid delivery.
