PureVPN is Pakistan's most successful global SaaS exit. Happy Ads drove thousands of paid subscriptions across the Middle East — where privacy isn't a feature, it's a necessity.
The Challenge
PureVPN — the Karachi-founded VPN service that has grown into one of the world's most recognised consumer security brands — needed to scale paid subscription acquisition across the Middle East. MENA's VPN market is unique: in a region where internet censorship varies by country (UAE and Saudi Arabia restrict VoIP and certain content categories), VPN adoption is driven by a combination of privacy motivation, content access needs (geo-blocked streaming services), and in some markets, explicit business necessity.
The subscription acquisition challenge for PureVPN in MENA was multi-dimensional: the market is legitimate and growing, but advertising VPN services on mainstream platforms (Meta, Google) requires careful creative navigation around policy restrictions on VPN advertising. The campaign needed to reach high-intent VPN users — people actively seeking privacy and security solutions — without triggering platform policy restrictions or appearing in inappropriate contexts.
Converting VPN users from free trial to paid subscription requires trust-building: VPN services handle sensitive user data, and Middle Eastern consumers (particularly in UAE and Saudi Arabia) are sophisticated about digital security. PureVPN's premium positioning — as the Middle East's leading VPN service with the strongest privacy credentials — needed to be communicated credibly to an audience that would scrutinise the claim.

The Solution
Happy Ads designed a subscription-focused performance campaign for PureVPN in the Middle East — targeting high-intent privacy and security audiences across programmatic mobile, tech publisher networks, and social platforms. Audience targeting concentrated on MENA tech users with demonstrated security and privacy interest: users of security apps, tech news readers, professionals using business VPN tools, and expat communities with content access needs.
Creative was segmented by the primary VPN use motivation: privacy-led creative for the UAE's privacy-conscious professional audience; streaming access creative for expat communities seeking home country content; business security creative for corporate users. Platform-specific policy constraints meant that certain creative angles required careful framing — Happy Ads' MENA performance team had deep experience navigating VPN advertising on Meta and programmatic platforms without policy violations.
The campaign ran on a hybrid model: a paid subscription CPA primary KPI with a free trial secondary metric to build the top of the conversion funnel. Free trial creative ran broadly to build aware audiences; subscription conversion creative retargeted free trial users and high-intent VPN searchers with time-limited offers. The result was thousands of paid PureVPN subscriptions across the Middle East — a commercially meaningful contribution to a subscription revenue base that PureVPN reports in the millions of monthly recurring subscribers globally.
